ce n'est pas de l'alcool, c'est du rhum!

There are two ways to make rum. The right way and the wrong way. Of course the French Caribbeans invented the right way — distilling pure, fermented juice pressed directly from freshly cut sugar cane.

The result of this method, originally developed in Martinique, is called Rhum Agricole and it's a far superior drink to the rum that you are probably used to.

Outside of the French islands, most rum is made by distilling molasses which is a by-product of the sugar industry. There’s a reason why rum punch, rum & coke and daiquiris are so popular. Because molasses-distilled rum tastes pretty terrible on its own.

Rhum Agricole, on the other hand, is a refreshing drink with complex flavours of freshly cut sugar cane. Best served with just a little squeeze of lime and a tiny dash of pure cane syrup. We call this a Ti Punch and it’s a little bit of sunshine in a glass!

There are may different Rhum Agricoles made throughout the French Caribbean (and recently other countries too!). Because it is make from fresh-cut cane, much like a fine wine, the terroir and variety are ever-present in the taste.

Contact me to organise a rum tasting event where I will take you on a taste tour of the islands and share my knowledge of all the finesse that goes into making the world’s greatest rhums. You’ll never drink another rum & coke again!
